Aqua Arthritis

This class will offer low-impact exercises for strength, range of motion and flexibility. This class takes place in the therapeutic pool.

You will need:  bathing suit, towel and photo I.D. (16+) or membership card. | You may want to bring: water bottle, lock, and flip flops or water shoes.

Aqua Fitness

Stretch and strengthen in the pool, where resistance from the water gives you a solid workout, without straining your body.

Aqua Zumba

Splashing, stretching, twisting, laughing, and even shouting are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines in a safe, challenging, water based workout that provides a cardio conditioning, body toning workout too.

Barre

This ballet-inspired fusion class mixes Pilates, dance, yoga, and strength training. Barre focuses on high reps of small range movements. In this class you will use your body weight, light dumbbells and Pilate balls.

Boot Camp

Bootcamp emphasizes on total-body functional training.  Classes include a broad range of bodyweight and equipment exercises in a circuit style using interval timing.

CycleFit

CycleFit gets your legs pumping with a high-powered indoor bike class set to energetic music. Working those major muscles in your legs also strengthens your most important muscle: your heart.

Since you control the intensity of the workout by adjusting your own bike, it’s a great workout for individuals of all ages and experiences.

You will need: indoor sneakers and photo I.D. (16+) or membership card. | You may want to bring: water bottle, lock and small towel.

Cycle and Core

30 minutes on the bike and 30 minutes in the studio training the core.

CycleFit gets your legs pumping with a high-powered indoor bike class set to energetic music. Working those major muscles in your legs also strengthens your most important muscle: your heart.

Since you control the intensity of the workout by adjusting your own bike, it’s a great workout for individuals of all ages and experiences.

CycleFit Tabata

30 minutes on the bike and 30 minutes in the studio.  Tabata training is a High Intensity Interval Training featuring exercises that last four minutes.  The instructor may use a variety of equipment.

Deep Water Aqua Fit

A great cardiovascular workout using a flotation belt in the deep water. There is no impact on the joints. This is a 45 minute class suitable for beginners to advanced. Confidence in deep water is required.

Deep Water Running

Deep water running is a non-impact form of running done in the water wearing a flotation belt. The water adds multidirectional resistance and an additional challenge to your workout.

Fit For Life

Fit for Life uses a variety of equipment to strengthen your muscles and increase your endurance for everyday activities. This is a low-impact class.

Group Power®

Work all of your muscles in this high repetition training workout.

Strength training is essential to staying healthy, and Group Power® at the YMCA can be adapted to just about everyone’s fitness level. Using an adjustable barbell, weight plates and your body weight, you will combine squats, lunges, presses and curls to make you fitter and stronger.

Group Power® is continuously refreshed with new music and choreography.

HIIT

Add some variety to your workout!  High Intensity Interval training offers an efficient workout for your entire body, keeping you sharp and motivated by changing the speed and frequency of your workout. High Intensity Interval training includes segments of cardio, muscle conditioning and flexibility exercises combined with brief periods of recovery.

Karate

Karate-do Shotokai is a non-competitive form of karate that emphasizes mental and physical development through the study and practice of the art.

Movements in Shotokai are flowing, full of vitality and energy. Regular practice uses principles of harmony, relaxation and the avoidance of brute force.

The practice of Shotokai is physically and mentally challenging but is a martial art that everyone can enjoy regardless of age or fitness level.

Balance, fitness, coordination, concentration, self-discipline and a higher state of awareness are just a few of the benefits of Shotokai.

Line Dancing

A fun intro to cardio with easy-to-follow moves and playlists full of old and new favorites.

Low Impact Aerobics

Low impact aerobics is choreographed moves to music using light dumbbells that works the whole body.

Pilates

YMCA Pilates offers a series of controlled movements and postures. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.  Beginners and seasoned athletes alike can benefit as it easily adapts to your personal level of fitness.

Pound®

This full-body workout combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.

Salsation®

SALSATION® is a fun dance fitness program based on functional training. No dance experience required. This class is gentle on the joints.

Step-n-Strength

YMCA Step classes incorporate an adjustable, non-slip platform into a full workout, making it a top calorie-burner, easily adaptable to different fitness levels. Keep The Step low, and it’s easy on the joints; raising The Step height raises the challenge as your body strengthens and fitness level increases.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi combines gently physical exercise and stretching with mindfulness. Tai Chi can improve balance control, fitness and flexibility.

Yoga

Rediscover and improve your strength, balance, and flexibility through yoga. YMCA Yoga classes will help you relax your mind while gently challenging, stretching, and relaxing your muscles. Don’t worry if you’re not flexible: yoga is safe and healthy for a wide range of body types. You’ll soon notice a stronger, more balanced body and an increase in your overall feeling of health and vitality.

The YMCA of Pictou County offers a series of yoga classes.

  • Yoga – This class will combine styles of physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation.
  • Power Yoga – This class focuses on a fitness-based approach.
  • Gentle Yoga – This class focuses on the joy of stretching and stillness of the mind.
  • Chair Yoga –  This class focuses on stretching while sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support. The poses are adaptations of those performed on the mat.

Women on Weights (WOW)
